NBC Certification

NBC CertificationThe National Balancing Council is a non-profit certifying authority in the testing and balancing field.  Our purpose is focused on developing, establishing, and monitoring high standards of performance for our contractors, and for professionals who design and specify commercial environmental systems.  We offer certification to well-qualified companies and technicians who agree to meet all NBC standards and to maintain a high level of quality and integrity in their business practices.

Key objectives of NBC include:
  • Establishing and maintaining practical industry standards for testing and balancing
  • Promoting the highest level of integrity, responsibility, and customer service from individuals and firms
  • Setting minimum training, education, and experience standards as a requisite for achieving and maintaining certification
  • Making available continuing training and education opportunities.
  • Acting as a certifying authority for firms and technicians meeting all NBC requirements, and who comply with the NBC objectives and Code of Conduct.
What We Ask of You:

NBC is for those who are dedicated to the safety and comfort of all their clients and who agree to uphold our standards of professionalism and integrity at all times.  As a certified balancing professional you agree to:

  • Take all possible measures to ensure that commercial environmental systems and properly installed, adjusted to design specifications, and achieving optimum performance levels.
  • Go beyond typical industry practices of merely “matching the numbers.”
  • Strive to exceed the standard and maximize system performance.
  • Move beyond the basics by testing the accuracy of system measured values against available manufacturer’s data.
  • Test, balance, and adjust systems in a precise and orderly manner following published NBC procedures, then report the results truthfully.
  • Document all test procedures and results and offer assistance and solutions in the remediation of any deficiencies.
  • Continuously improve your skill level and proficiency by staying abreast of the latest industry trends and technology.
  • Strive to be the most qualified, best trained, most professional, and most customer-focused in our industry.
 

Companies seeking NBC certification must have been in business for a minimum of one year prior to application, and must employ at least one full time technician who is qualified to be designated as a supervisor.  In addition, you must be able to show evidence of five years active air and/or hydronic balancing experience, ORNBC Certification completion of a recognized course in balancing and diagnostic training.

Before certification is issued you must be in possession of all required instruments and tools and provide letters of recommendation from balancing clients mechanical contractors, engineers, or project supervisors.  Final balancing reports from previous commercial projects are also required.

The following minimum standards must be met by those applying for certification.
  • Candidates for Certified Balancing Supervisor must have four years of demonstrable experience in commercial air and hydronic testing and balancing, or two years experience combined with completion of a recognized testing and diagnostic training course.
Comprehensive Training & Certification
  • Candidates for certification must attend the NBC Certification Course and successfully complete the coursework, as well as the written and practical Certification Exams.
  • Certifications are valid for two years.  Supervisors and Technicians must complete a recertification course prior to the expiration of their current certification in order to remain in good standing with NBC.
  • Each member firm must have at least one Certified Balancing Supervisor.  There is no limit on the number of Certified Balancing Technicians per supervisor.

Complete guidelines and requirements for National Balancing Council Certification will be provided to qualified candidates upon approval by the NBC Membership Committee.  Any variations from, or exception to certification requirements must be approved by the NBC Board of Directors.

Note: The National Balancing Council, Inc. is solely responsible for administering and interpreting all standards and procedures as set forth in our written documents and manuals.  Any modifications to, or waiver of certification requirements, standards, or procedures are at the discretion of NBC and not subject to review by any outside individual or entity.  We reserve the right to amend, adopt, change, or remove requirements, standards, and procedures as deemed necessary.
